How 2: View Images in the Terminal (Command line, Console)

15 07 2008

I just returned from a nice holiday but more about that later. When I wanted to view my holiday pictures eog for some reason was very slow in starting or just didn’t start at all. So this lead me to try something I wanted to do for a while now – Watch my pictures in the terminal. This is how i did it.

1. Find a program
After a quick google I found this forum post talking about the subject. In the threads the following apps was mentioned:

I decided to try out zgv mainly because one of the posters said you don’t need frame buffer and with my total lack of knowledge about all things graphic related zgv sounded easier to setup.

2. Install zgv
I am using Ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy) and zgv was in the repositories so I just did:
sudo apt-get install zgv
This installed zgv version 5.9

3. Use zgv
I just typed zgv in the terminal and a full screen file browser thing that I like was displayed from there it is as simple as selecting files ect. Read the man page for more options and features.

3. Problems with zgv
I found the app was nice and easy to use but there was one or two irritating problems that I have experienced. I could not display images without going full screen even if I specified the option and after zgv is run all my other consoles (Ctrl+Alt+F1…) did not work.

I will probably use zgv from now on until I reinstall upgrade or do whatever that solve my eog problem. When I get the time I will also post some of my holiday pictures.
